Paul Melendez, Management and Organizations Professor of Practice

Panelist and Facilitator: Paul Melendez, Management and Organizations Professor of Practice

Paul Melendez has been with the Eller College of Management since 1996. He earned his doctorate from the University of Arizona with a specialization in privatization. As a professor of practice, he teaches courses in business ethics, international management, organizational behavior, human resources and innovation. He has led academic programs to emerging economies in South America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. He consults for clients around the world on ethical decision making, transformational leadership and innovation. As assistant department head, he is primarily responsible for the undergraduate and MBA program curriculum and overseeing teaching assignments for management courses. As founder of the Center for Leadership Ethics, he leads efforts to improve organizational ethics through cutting-edge research, education and outreach programs. Melendez was previously on the faculty of the School of Public Administration and Policy and has also served as assistant dean for Eller Executive Education. Melendez is the author of the textbook Moral Problems in Management: An Objective Model of Analysis, published in 2019.

John Lai is Chairman, CEO and President of Mister Car Wash. Before being named CEO in 2014, John spent 4 years as Mister’s Chief Operating Officer and was responsible for the company’s operations, human resources, and marketing. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Market Development, and played a key role in crafting the company’s employee-first culture and relentless focus on continuously improving the customer’s experience. Prior to joining Mister Car Wash, John was Vice President of Sales for Financenter, President of Blue Coral Systems, and Manager for Nestle. John interned with IBM his senior year of college. John’s a member of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and Friends of Arizona Lacrosse. John’s served on the boards of the International Car Wash Association, and the Western Car Wash Association. John earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arizona in 1987.

Panelist: Jeff Sales, Executive Director for Southern Arizona, Arizona Technology Council

Jeff Sales is the Executive Director for Southern Arizona, Arizona Technology Council. He is the founder and president of Arizona Engineered Products, an electronics company based in Tucson. Jeff has served as the Senior Aide to Tucson’s Mayor Walkup; responsible for business issues, economic development, military affairs and office operations. He began his career in television, serving as general manager at television stations across the country. Jeff earned a BFA in Broadcasting from the University of Cincinnati and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Panelist: Molly Mary Gilbert, Cushman & Wakefield | PICOR

During her 17-year career with the University of Arizona Tech Park, she helped start numerous initiatives designed to bring stakeholders together including the Arizona Business Incubator Association, Next Steps for Vets, Tucson Innovation Partnership, and Racing the Sun. Molly is a co-founder of the Arizona Center for Innovation (now University of Arizona Center for Innovation), one of the oldest business incubation programs in the state and was the project manager for The Bridges overseeing construction of infrastructure improvements on the property.

An active Tucsonan, Molly has served on numerous boards including the Metropolitan Education Commission (MEC), Pima County Workforce Investment Board (WIB), Tucson Urban League, the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona’s African American Legacy Foundation, and as an advisor for SARSEF (Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Foundation). Molly was born and raised in Phoenix, moving to Tucson to complete her degrees at The University of Arizona. She has a BFA in Media Arts and her MBA from the Eller School of Management.
